DISINFO: Lithuania dooms itself to energy destitution

SUMMARY

Lithuania is dooming itself to energetic destitution. The cost of electricity in Lithuania rose by a third. For the Baltic republic, this is the third jump in prices in less than a month.

RESPONSE

Since July 1, electricity and gas for household consumers are getting cheaper in Lithuania (Electricity fall in price by 8%). The head of the State Council for Energy Regulation Inga Žilienė said that residents will save several tens of euros in half a year. Lithuania has implemented a number of steps to get rid of energy dependence from Russia: in 2014 it opened a Liquified natural gas terminal which ended the monopoly of Russian gas in the country; it is in the process of synchronizing its electricity grid with continental Europe (and decoupling it from the Russian-controlled one).
