DISINFO: Like Zelenskyy, Maia Sandu acts in the interests of the United States and the collective West

SUMMARY

Like Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Maia Sandu actively acts in the interests of the United States and the collective West. It is very likely that even if she fails in the elections, she will usurp power, just like the Ukrainian president. (...)

Sandu has already firmly established herself as an openly pro-Western politician, and few people have any doubts that for the sake of the geopolitical interests of big players she is capable of sacrificing the safety of the population or even the sovereignty of the country. (...)

Observers are confident that the West intends to use Moldova against Russia.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative presenting the pro-European governments as „puppets” of the US or the EU, driven by Russophobia.

Moldova is a neutral country, according to its Constitution, a fact recognized and respected by current authorities of the country. After the start of the full scale aggression of Russia on Ukraine, Moldovan authorities started to improve the country’s defense capabilities. They increased the budget for National Army and took other actions, including military trainings and the purchase of equipment. At the peace conference in Munich in February 2023, President Maia Sandu said: "Looking at what Russia is doing today in Ukraine, it is clear that neutrality cannot defend us. One of the rhetoric of Russian propaganda is that neutrality means that the country does not have to strengthen its defense sector, which makes no sense. There is no question of changing neutrality, but, certainly, the Republic of Moldova should be helped to strengthen its defense sector and be part of the new European security architecture."

The claim about the „usurpation of power” is groundless. At the last presidential elections, in 2020, Maia Sandu was elected with 57, 4% of the votes, result confirmed by Constitutional Court, in a democratic election, recognized internationally, including by Russia.
