DISINFO: Life under Ukrainian control in Kherson has worsened

SUMMARY

Residents of Kherson complained to the British media that life under the Armed Forces of Ukraine has become worse.

After the Ukrainian Armed Forces entered Kherson, it was repeatedly reported that the Ukrainian authorities abused the residents of the city and the right-bank districts, who were unable to leave for the Russian-controlled territory on the left bank of the Dnieper.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative alleging Ukraine of abusing citizens and conducting war crimes. A classic example of pro-Kremlin manipulation, taking out of context selected sentences and misrepresenting of a Western media (Sky News) report. The reason for using a Sky News quote is to hijack credibility for own purposes.

Pro-Kremlin propaganda outlets seek to create the perception as if the dire living conditions in Kherson are the result of the liberation of the region by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

For this purpose, the pro-Kremlin media manipulated the article by Sky News, selecting a single quote by an individual resident who expressed dissatisfaction with the provided medical aid and presented it as if it depicts the position of the whole population and a view covering all living conditions. The context provided in the article by Sky News is being omitted in the misleading articles disseminated by the pro-Kremlin media. In fact, the majority of Kherson residents mentioned in the Sky News article told reporters of their joy that the city had returned under the control of Ukraine, even with all the difficulties. See the full debunk at Myth Detector.

Kherson was liberated from Russian occupation on 11 November 2022. The Russian army conducted a brutal occupation and destroyed key energy infrastructure, electricity lines and stations. Local authorities and the government are working on restoring the energy supplies and food deliveries.

See our recent article ‘Blessed’ are the ‘evacuated’ plus similar disinformation narratives: Ukraine wants to deport residents of Kherson, Russian withdrew from Kherson because Ukraine wants to blow up the Kakhovka dam, Zelenskyy saw that Kherson is a Russian city, Ukraine wants to blow up the Kakhovka dam to block water supply to Crimea.
