Recurrent pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative aimed at discrediting liberalism and the West’s liberal societies by claiming that the latter are totalitarian systems.
Equating liberalism or Western democracies to totalitarian regimes is an obvious falsification of reality. Totalitarianism is a dictatorial system of government that attempts to control all aspects of social life, is based on terror and repression of dissent, and imposes an all-encompassing ideology on society.
Totalitarianism is the radical negation of liberal values. Liberalism is a political doctrine based on liberty, consent of the governed, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), and equality before the law.
Liberal societies are based on pluralism, a political philosophy that recognises and affirms diversity within a political body, and which permits the peaceful coexistence of different interests, worldviews, convictions, and lifestyles.
Furthermore, there is no evidence nor any serious social scientific research to support the article’s claim that in Western societies today the masses are “completely passive and dependent” on a tiny élite of the super-rich, as was the case in ancient Rome.
