DISINFO: Intelligence services of NATO states identified a Ukrainian trace in the Leipzig incident

SUMMARY

According to reliable data held by the SVR, the intelligence agencies of NATO states that examined the circumstances of the incident informed their national authorities that there was not even the slightest evidence of Russian involvement. On the contrary, they pointed to numerous indications of a Ukrainian trace.

RESPONSE

The claim is part of a wider disinformation campaign aimed at denying Russia’s responsibility for the drone incident at Leipzig airport in August 2026.

The claim is based solely on an assertion by Russia’s SVR, which has provided no verifiable evidence or intelligence documentation.

The alleged “Ukrainian trace” has not been publicly substantiated: no credible German news outlets or official statements suggest Ukrainian false flag involvement. The SVR claim presents an unsubstantiated narrative as an established intelligence finding and selectively omits the findings publicly cited by German authorities.

Germany’s decision to name Russia as the culprit followed weeks of efforts by investigators to secure more evidence of Moscow’s involvement. This conclusion rests on three strands pointing in the same direction: police forensics, the resemblance to previous operations, and intelligence reporting. Germany’s interior minister Alexander Dobrindt said investigators identified a configuration and components resembling those seen in Russia’s war against Ukraine, with the operation reflecting “a high degree of technical expertise and considerable organisational effort”. German authorities identified two suspects of Russian and Belarusian origin as the likely perpetrators of the attack. German investigators are examining suspected links to the Russian military intelligence service GRU.

According to accounts published by German and Swiss media, the drone had been cached in advance in a hole dug near the airport perimeter, suggesting reconnaissance and local preparation rather than an opportunistic flight. The same reporting describes the device's configuration, its explosive and its detonation mechanism as the work of professionals, and says DNA recovered from it links suspects to Lithuania, Finland and Poland.

US intelligence officials reported directly to the Wall Street Journal on August 7, 2026, that they believed Russia was likely responsible for the Leipzig incident, contradicting claims that Ukrainian involvement remained under serious consideration. Moreover, German parliamentary intelligence member Roderich Kiesewetter directly stated "I assume this was a targeted hybrid attack—an attempted act of terror—orchestrated from Russia," reflecting official German assessment, not speculation about Ukrainian involvement.
