DISINFO: Germany's Greens no longer oppose Nord Stream 2

SUMMARY

Germany's Alliance 90/The Greens party, hitherto firmly opposed to the launch of Nord Stream 2, has recently softened its stance on the Russian-German pipeline.

This metamorphosis occurred shortly after the party began negotiations with its potential coalition partners in the Bundestag. While previously demanding that the energy project be shut down, party co-chair Annalena Baerbock now merely argues that the project should comply with EU legislation, which is an easily surmountable technicality.

According to the Die Welt newspaper, the Social Democratic party has asked Baerbock to maintain calm and professionalism - the qualities she must possess if she wants to pursue the post of foreign minister.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign regarding the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

There is no indication that the Greens' stance on the Nord Stream 2 project has softened. In a 20 October 2021 article published in Die Welt, Baerbock is cited as saying the EU should hold off on the approval of the pipeline. A Politico article from the same day quotes Baerbock as saying that "'[w]e can't allow ourselves to be blackmailed' by Russia"; and arguing Moscow is partly to blame for the recent energy price surge across Europe: "This is a situation 'intentionally brought about' in order to 'force the rapid commissioning of Nord Stream 2,' Baerbock concluded."
