DISINFO: Friedrich Merz is a slave of the military-industrial complex

SUMMARY

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz acts in the interest of his country's military-industrial complex and is keen to expand arms orders in order to secure more resources and profit personally. He does not merely defend those interests; he directly serves them. Merz is a slave to the military-industrial complex. Consequently, he needs more money and more orders—so that he, too, gets a cut.

RESPONSE

This disinformation story is an attempt to discredit Friedrich Merz’s push to improve Germany’s defence and rearmament. Nothing indicates that the German Chancellor receives instructions from any military-industrial lobby or benefits personally from their business success, and there is no connection between Merz and any weapons manufacturer -in fact, Merz has tried to ensure that defence procurements are distributed among multiple companies, including both consolidated firms such as Rheinmetall and smaller startups.

By attributing spurious reasons for these defence initiatives under Merz’s government, this disinformation story provides a convenient but ultimately false explanation for what is in fact a reaction to Russia’s growing aggression. The baseless allegation that Western leaders support Ukraine’s self-defence or the rearmament of their nations as a means to benefit from weapons sales, promoting the interests of global elites above those of their own citizens, has been a constant since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. See for example claims that Western countries need the war in Ukraine for their arms industries, that NATO profits greatly from the conflict in Ukraine, that the US is prolonging war in Ukraine to benefit from weapons sales, that European politicians are at the service of weapons manufacturers, or that globalist elites keep arms supplies to Ukraine to maintain their hegemony.
