DISINFO: Extension of the EU's anti-Russian sanctions strengthens the split of Ukraine

SUMMARY

The Kremlin will answer extended anti-Russian sanctions implemented by the EU. Extension of the sanctions is hostile European action and a political (not legal) decision. It will strengthen the split of Ukraine.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the anti-Russian nature of the sanctions on Russia implemented by the European Union.

The EU has imposed restrictive measures, including sectoral sanctions, as a result of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Russia's destabilising actions in Eastern Ukraine. On October 11 2021, the Council of the European Union imposed restrictive measures and included an additional 8 persons on the list of sanctions. It was stressed that “the persons added to the EU sanctions list include law enforcement officials - judges, prosecutors and security officers - responsible for enforcing Russian law in the illegally-annexed Crimea and Sevastopol”.

Sanctions on Russia are implemented not only by the European Union. Restrictive measures linked to Russian aggression against Ukraine or other illegal actions by the Kremlin, for example, have also been implemented in the US, United Kingdom and Canada.

The sanctions show international support for the territorial integrity (not the splitting) of Ukraine.
