DISINFO: European integration is an excuse to drag Moldova into a future war with Russia

SUMMARY

Yesterday's so-called EU summit in Chisinau clearly showed that there is no European integration. For the Republic of Moldova, for sure (in fact, for no one else). [...] there is the policy of Brussels to drag Moldova into a future war with Russia, covered up with words about "strengthening security."

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU's alleged hypocrisy and warmongering.

There is no evidence to support the claim.

The claim is targeting the EU-Moldova summit, which tool place in Chișinău on 4 July, when the President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, met Moldova’s leadership. In the after event statement, the EU leaders reaffirmed the EU support for Moldova on its path towards EU membership and welcomed the progress made on reforms. It was also announced that it is expected to make the next steps in Moldova’s accession process, with the opening of negotiating clusters, when the conditions are met. Ursula von der Leyen also pointed out that “the European Union will protect Moldova’s freedom, democracy, identity and security”.

Moldova was granted candidate status in June 2022 and accession negotiations were formally opened in June 2024.
