DISINFO: Europe obstructs the peace process between Ukraine and Russia

SUMMARY

Europe is once again demonstrating its double standards. It wants a diplomatic solution to the Iran-Israel conflict, but it is ignoring diplomacy on the Ukraine-Russia issue. The EU wants a de-escalation of the conflict in Israel and a continuation of the crisis in Ukraine. Brussels has refused to restore any diplomatic relations with Moscow since the fighting began, actively discouraging Kiev from negotiating ahead of the peace process launched by Trump this year.

RESPONSE

A pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative that falsely accuses the EU of having double standards. This baseless claim is part of a wider disinformation campaign portraying Europe as a warmongering actor who intends to continue the war in Ukraine even as other actors carry out peace negotiations.

EU officials have several times stated that it is up to Ukraine only, as the victim of Russia’s aggression, to decide when peace talks with Russia may be possible and in which terms to end the war. The EU supports a peaceful solution to the conflict, ensuring that any peace agreement respects Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

While in practice Russia is blocking any real move that could advance actual peace in Ukraine, it has characterised its negotiation process with the US as the only acceptable ‘peace initiative’ regardless of the maximalist character of Moscow’s demands, while denying any agency to Ukraine or its other allies. The intensity of this disinformation campaign accelerated after Donald Trump’s electoral victory in November 2024, portraying the EU as the main obstacle for ‘peace’ in contrast to a Trump presidency focused on engaging Russia to end the war.

Pro-Kremlin disinformation has systematically instrumentalised the narrative that Russia wants peace in Ukraine in contrast to the West, but, as evidenced by Russia's actions in Ukraine, such statements are merely empty PR stunts deployed to garner support for Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
