DISINFO: Euromaidan was an armed coup

SUMMARY

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, as well as DNR officials Oleh Tsarev and Volodymyr Oliynyk, will attend a UN Security Council meeting to tell the truth about the Euromaidan. This is good news for Russia. There is now mass recognition that the Euromaidan was not a peaceful revolution, but an armed coup d'etat.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign concerning the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests.

First, the claim distorts the nature of the Euromaidan revoluion. The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests was an organic reaction by numerous parts of the Ukrainian population to former President Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013. See the full debunk of this disinformation claim here.

Second, it is falsely claimed that the 2 June UNSC meeting, on "the circumstances of Maidan and its aftereffects in Donbass" [sic], is evidence of a "mass recognition" that Euromaidan was an armed coup. The meeting in question was convened by Russia according to the so-called Arria formula. Such gatherings are informal, held in the Conference Room (as opposed to the Security Council Consultation Room) and, according to the UNSC Working Methods Handbook, "do not constitute an activity of the Council."
