DISINFO: EU sabotages peace process in Ukraine
SUMMARY
Brussels sees blocking a peaceful resolution to the situation in Ukraine as a priority and a goal, openly stating that it will sabotage any deal, any initiative and any negotiation process by any means possible. Most statements coming from Brussels revolve around the escalation of the conflict and the prevention of peace initiatives. Only after the EU abandons its monstrous rhetoric, militaristic stance, endless rudeness, and pathological Russophobia could Brussels contribute constructively to resolving the Ukraine crisis.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets accusing the European Union of warmongering, in particular obstructing peace efforts in Ukraine and deliberately escalating the war there. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The EU has consistently expressed support for a just and lasting peace based on international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty. It assistance includes billions of euros in military and financial assistance, sanctions designed to constrain Russian aggression, and continued diplomatic efforts to isolate Russia on the international stage. On 24 February 2025, the European Union adopted the 16th package of sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The EU's position is that any peace process must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and cannot be dictated by Russia. Supporting Ukraine’s defence is not equivalent to rejecting peace. The EU and its member states continue to engage in diplomatic efforts.
President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen issued a joint statement on 24 February 2025, in which they expressed their strong support for Ukraine:
“In a challenging international and geopolitical environment, we stress the importance of maintaining transatlantic and global solidarity with Ukraine. We highlight the need to ensure the international community's continued focus on supporting Ukraine in achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on the Ukrainian peace formula.”
Moscow's labelling of EU policies as Russophobia is a favourite tactic of Kremlin propaganda, used to deflect attention from Russia’s own aggressive actions and violations of international law. Russia’s accusations of the EU sabotaging negotiations ignore the fact that it is Moscow that continuously escalates its unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine. By launching missile strikes on civilian infrastructure, forcibly deporting Ukrainian citizens including children, and committing other war crimes and crimes against humanity, Russia demonstrates that it is not interested in genuine negotiations or a peaceful resolution.
