DISINFORMATION CASE DETAILS

DISINFO: EU is ruled by an American NATO General

SUMMARY

The real executive ruler of the European nation (European Union) is the American administration.

The clear evidence of such is that 22 of the 26 countries are in the NATO military system, which is governed by an American general named by the American President himself.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlindisinformation narrative about theUS presence in Europe, portraying Europeas a vassal of the USA and trying to undermine the sovereignty of European countries.

The European Union was created by thevoluntary initiative of European nations. Its citizens are directly represented in theEuropean Parliament and Member States are represented in theEuropean Council and theCouncil of the EU. The United States of America is not part of these institutions. The US had no role in the creation of the EU and has no say in its decisions.

On the other hand, the European Union currently counts 27 countries, while the NATO has 30 member countries (including North Macedonia), two are located in North America (Canada and the United States), 28 are in Europe, one of which, Turkey, is in both Europe and Asia.

Additionally, the current secretary-general of NATO is not American, but a former Norwegian prime minister calledJens Stoltenberg, who took office on1 October 2014, after being appointed by member states following a consensus among its member.

Similar disinformation narratives claim thatNATO is a new type of US colonialism, that European élites obey Washington, thatEU and NATO member states are subordinate to the US, whilethe US has long regarded the EU as a kind of protectorate, and thatlined up with the US, the EU never took independent decisions.
