DISINFO: Drone in Leipzig was a false flag operation like the poisoning of the Skripals

SUMMARY

After nearly a month of silence, German and European leaders have suddenly whipped themselves into a frenzy and are accusing Russia of creating a diversion about the September 6th election for the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament.

The Leipzig drone incident is a textbook case of manipulation and deceit designed to divert public attention from the real issues. A classic "false flag" operation. That is when you pose as your own enemy so you can subsequently accuse them of provocation, thereby justifying action against them that would otherwise be unwarranted. [...]

It is rather like the accusations of poisoning by secret services—specifically using the one poison that allows them to be positively identified (for those who recall the Skripal affair, that 2018 Russophobic crisis originating in England).

RESPONSE

This is a common FIMI narrative aimed at deflecting responsibility and undermining Western security assessments. It emerged following the incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of 4-5 August 2026, where an explosive device attached to a drone was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. German authorities treated the case as a suspected act of sabotage and transferred the investigation to prosecutors and counterterrorism authorities.

Accusing the West of staging false-flag provocations is a standard Russian FIMI tactic: deny the obvious, deflect blame, and accuse adversaries of orchestrating events for covert purposes. Disinformation claims around the poisoning of Sergei Skripal have already been broadly addressed by EuvsDisinfo (e.g. here, here, and here). Read here the UK government's evidence about Russia's involvement in this chemical attack.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt mentioned the possibility of foreign involvement in this attempt, without naming a specific state. He stated the attack was carried out by professionals.

US intelligence officials reported directly to the Wall Street Journal on August 7, 2026, that they believed Russia was likely responsible for the Leipzig incident, contradicting claims that Ukrainian involvement remained under serious consideration. Moreover, German parliamentary intelligence member Roderich Kiesewetter directly stated "I assume this was a targeted hybrid attack—an attempted act of terror—orchestrated from Russia," reflecting official German assessment, not speculation about Ukrainian involvement.

No credible German news outlets or official statements suggest Ukrainian false flag involvement was a primary investigative theory.

According to German media reports, investigators found DNA on the drone linking the case to a wider Russian sabotage campaign. The DNA reportedly matches evidence from the 2024 DHL parcel attacks, for which suspects face charges of terrorism and sabotage on behalf of a foreign power. The Lithuanian Prosecutor General's Office and Eurojust have stated that the suspects are allegedly linked to Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU.
