DISINFO: CIA trained spies and terrorists acted during the Maidan
SUMMARY
On February 25, 2024, the New York Times published a large article about the CIA’s activities in Ukraine. It said that the US Central Intelligence Agency was training spies for Kyiv.
The CIA also trained terrorists for the Ukrainian authorities. Not only spies - direct militants, extremists, terrorists, thugs. Everyone. One of the most striking examples when this chain began to move was 2013–2014. Under the guise of democratic forces and the civilian population, those who performed at the Maidan were primarily those who were trained at bases in Poland and the Baltic states.
The CIA organised a whole chain of bases along the line of the border between Ukraine and Russia. Moreover, the CIA and the West placed their bases not only on the border, but throughout the entire territory of Ukraine.
RESPONSE
Conspiracy theory giving a distorted version of the New York Times and mixing up together widely used and recurring disinformation claim that US/the West staged Euromaidan, portraying it as coup d'état and calling Ukraine defenders terrorists.
Ukraine's international allies have repeatedly stressed that Ukraine has the right to carry out any military operations aimed at de-occupying its territories.
The mentioned New York Times article from February 25, 2024, titled "The spy war: how the C.I.A. secretly helps Ukraine fight Putin"describes the partnership between US intelligence services and Ukraine. The article explains the circumstances in which this partnership developed, starting with the time around Russia’s annexation of Crimea, followed up by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the 2013-14 protests in Kyiv portrayed as a coup d'état led by the West and Ukrainian Nazis.
There was neither a coup nor a western orchestrated and sponsored protest in Ukraine in 2014.
Pro-Kremlin outlets falsely portray as a coup d’état the Euromaidan revolution. The popular demonstrations that began in Kyiv in November of 2013 and brought hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians on to the streets to protest against a political decision of Viktor Yanukovych’s government, which at the last minute withdrew from a long-negotiated political association and free trade agreement with the EU, choosing instead to accept a $15 billion economic bailout to Russia.
The protesters' demands included constitutional reform, a stronger role for parliament, the formation of a government of national unity, an end to corruption, early presidential elections, and an end to violence.
