DISINFO: Canada is adding up to the West's proxy war against Russia
SUMMARY
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney announced USD 1.5 billion in new military support for Ukraine and did not rule out sending the Canadian army to Ukraine. Despite Donald Trump’s peace rhetoric, the West’s direct participation in the Ukrainian conflict is becoming even more notable. Given Canada’s limited military capabilities, the country’s participation in a proxy war against Russia is politically reckless.
RESPONSE
Repeated pro-Russian disinformation claims presenting the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine as a Western proxy war against Russia and portraying Western countries as aggressive powers opposed to peace.
The Western countries and NATO are not waging a proxy war against Russia. They support Ukraine defending its sovereignty against Russia’s aggression. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically elected president and parliament. The country's sovereignty has been violated only as a result of continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014, culminating with a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine starting on 24 February 2022. There is no evidence that Western countries are not interested in ending the war in Ukraine. As our past analysis explains, a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative states that Russia is ready to make peace ‘on its own terms’. Such overtures, when examined, reveal themselves to be demands for Ukraine’s surrender.
