In fact he was asked: "How do you intend to convince [Moldova's President Igor] Dodon's supporters that the Republic of Moldova needs unification (with Romania)?" Basescu answered: "This is no longer needed. Those who support Mr. Dodon need to be beaten in elections! Their opinion can not be changed". Further debunking by API.
