DISINFO: Baltic countries don't oppose Nord Stream 2 anymore

SUMMARY

Until recently, the Baltic countries were fiercely against the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline. In the end of last year they suddenly stopped opposing.

RESPONSE

In December 2017, pro-Kremlin outlets like Sputnik published articles about sudden change in Baltic countries' position regarding the Nord Stream 2. The disinformation about the change is based on a statement by prime ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. They note only that "the Nord Stream 2 project, if implemented. must be in full compliance with the EU acquis and the Energy Union principles." President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė stressed in October that the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 "contravened the Energy Union’s objectives and would further increase European dependence on Gazprom's supplies." Estonia has also raised concerns about the geopolitical effect of Nord Stream as a project which goes against the principles of the Energy Union and gives Russia more instruments to use energy as a foreign policy tool.
