DISINFO: Armenian leadership is eliminating sovereignty and turning the country into a Western colony

SUMMARY

We see how Armenia is moving very quickly along the path of Ukraine. We know how this policy ended for Ukraine, where national interests are sacrificed for the sake of Western interests. The course that the current leadership of Armenia has taken is not simply a direction towards the West, but a course to destroy Armenia's sovereignty and turn it into a kind of colony of Western powers.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the loss of Armenian sovereignty, challenging Armenia's statehood and its leadership.

The claim appeared after a series of arrests ordered by the Armenian government to prevent what it denounces as a coup plot, which this disinformation story aims to exploit for destabilisation purposes.

Armenia is a sovereign state, a member of numerous international organisations, including the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) along with Russia, as well as the Eurasian Economic Union.

The claim that Armenia is rapidly moving in the same direction as Ukraine is a false equivalence, ignoring the unique geopolitical context of both countries. The assertion that Armenia's leadership is aiming to destroy the country's sovereignty and turn it into a Western colony is unfounded.

The EU and Armenia have been steadily intensifying their cooperation in recent years. The EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has led to tangible improvements in governance, economy, and connectivity.

Negotiations between Armenia and the EU on various projects, including a visa-free regime, have started. The EU's engagement with Armenia focuses mostly on economic development, governance reforms and military issues.

The Kremlin regime has long sought to publicly style itself as anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist. However, Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine exposed Russia’s own imperial and colonial ambitions vis-à-vis its neighbours in Europe, Caucasus, and Asia.
