DISINFO: Armenian cooperation with NATO leads to a loss of sovereignty in the field of national defense and security
SUMMARY
[...There is a] threat of loss of state sovereignty in the field of national defence and security due to the deepening dialogue with NATO.
This year, Armenia, together with the alliance, took part in dozens of events. Armenia continues to modernize its armed forces by NATO standards, and its military personnel are trained in some countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
NATO's real goal is to strengthen its position in the region and create conditions for manipulation using the “divide and rule” scheme.
RESPONSE
Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about aggressive NATO portraying it as a belligerent organisation, with an aim at discrediting Armenia's cooperation with the Alliance.
The claim was made in the context of high-level political dialogue and military cooperation between the Republic of Armenia and the EU, UK, France, Greece, and other Western countries.
Armenia-NATO partnership relations date back to 1992 when Armenia joined the North Atlantic Cooperation Council, later renamed the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (Armenia has been a member of EAPC since 1997). Armenia's cooperation with NATO has gradually broadened since Armenia joined the Partnership for Peace in 1994. Starting from 2006 the political dialogue and partnership cooperation in various fields have been developing between Armenia and NATO in the framework of the Individual Partnership Action Plan.
Armenia contributes to the NATO-led operation and cooperates with Allies and other partner countries in many other areas. A key priority for NATO is to strengthen political dialogue and to provide focused advice and assistance in support of democratic, institutional, and defence reform efforts in Armenia. The pro-Kremlin outlet roots its narrative in the imperialistic allegation that the Caucasus region and Armenia are exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to discredit Armenia's steps to deepen relations with the Western countries.
