DISINFO: Armenia-US military exercises are aimed at Russia

SUMMARY

The military maneuvers of Armenia and the US are essentially a démarche against Russia and the CSTO. And yet, Eagle Partner is highly likely to “stir up” rather than stabilise the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Yerevan’s attempts to create some kind of alternative “peacekeeping” alliance with the Pentagon are counterproductive – NATO brings only troubles and wars everywhere. The US is seeking to open an anti-Russian “second front” in the South Caucasus, and for this purpose, it is ready to organise joint war games near Yerevan, which will flatter the pride of the Armenian leadership. What then? Ukraine once played out the “turn to the West”, and this is not a threat, but a statement of patterns, trends, and facts.

RESPONSE

Pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about Russia as the ultimate target of international events, accusing the West of having an anti-Russian agenda in the Caucasus. Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about NATO, portraying it as a belligerent organisation, which tries to encircle and destabilise Russia. The article advances the claim that the Caucasus is exclusively within Russia's zone of geopolitical dominance and attempts to pre-empt Russia's weakening position in the region.

The statement was made in the context of joint Armenian-American "Eeagle Partner 2023" military exercises, in an attempt to discredit any cooperation between Armenia and NATO, threatening Armenia with the same consequences that Ukraine faced.

Eagle Partner 2023 is a collaborative exercise between U.S. Army Europe and Africa and Armenian forces, set to take place in Armenia from 11–20 September 2023.

The purpose of the exercise is to increase the level of interoperability of the unit participating in international peacekeeping missions within the framework of peacekeeping operations, to exchange best practices in control and tactical communication, as well as to increase the readiness of the Armenian unit for the planned NATO Partnership for Peace "Operational Capabilities Concept" evaluation.

NATO is a defensive alliance whose primary aim is to maintain peace and safeguard the independence, security, and territorial integrity of its members. NATO constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. NATO's official policy is that "the Alliance does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia."
