DISINFO: Africa’s peace plan highlights Europe’s incompetence
SUMMARY
African nations have recently published a peace plan to solve the Ukraine crisis and presented it to Europe and the world. Europe has been offering Africa peace plans and road maps over the past 100 or 1000 years and watching how these have been implemented, while Africa is putting forth its peace plan now because Europe is so incompetent and can do nothing.
RESPONSE
This is a particular case of a disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets, claiming that the European Union is unable to find a solution to the Ukraine war. This claim was made in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Moscow’s withdrawal from the grain deal.
In reality, the fact that African countries published their peace plan in June 2023 does not mean that the European Union and Ukraine's other allies are doing nothing. Europe has been incessantly trying to stop Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression since its began on 24 February 2022 (see here and here), but it is Russia which has been stalling any progress. In response to the African peace plan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ruled out any peace talks with Russia until it withdraws its troops from Ukraine completely. The 10-step African plan did not contain a point on withdrawal, though it did contain a call for Ukrainian-Russian negotiations.
