Recurring pro-Kremlin narrative that seeks to discredit Western liberal-democracies by claiming that the latter are, in reality, dictatorships masked as democracies and are ruled by, and in the interest of, globalist elites or “secret élites”.
According to the geopolitica.ru article, an opinion piece published by the Financial Times (FT) states that:
“an oligopoly has formed in the US and, as a consequence, there is neither a democracy nor a republican form of government” in America.
This is a clear manipulation of the FT piece, which does not state or imply that in America there is no democracy or a Republican form of government. The FT piece suggests that the US political economy is getting close to an oligopoly (which means that a small number of large firms dominate a market or industry), arguing that in the US, powerful corporations increasingly dominate the policy-making process, while ordinary citizens have little or no independent influence on this process. Nowhere does the FT piece state that, as a result of the power of large corporations, a democracy and Republican government no longer exist in the US.
Political scientists have long debated the influence of economic élites on the US policy-making process and the extent to which the American public can influence this process. Different theories have been proposed on this issue, but all serious researchers agree that the US is a liberal democracy based on institutional principles such as the limitation of the exercise of political power by the rule of law, free and fair elections, the freedom of assembly, association, and of the press as well as the protection of fundamental rights.
